I’m reminded of the farm in South LA that was closed by the city council. It was the size of a football field and fed many residents organic fruits, vegetables and herbs/spices. While many schools focus on the mental health portion of social work, we can’t forget social justice, of which food justice plays a large part. If DCFS takes away a child for being obese, why aren’t the social workers asking about available healthy choices in their neighborhood? If we’re looking at mental health, studies are showing diet does play a part in it. We all know that kids who eat healthier are more likely to do well in school.
